This course is designed to help educators develop the skills needed to design and facilitate writing instruction that promotes disciplinary literacy and empowers students to express their ideas effectively in both oral and written form. Participants will explore the theory behind high-challenge, high-support instruction and how it fosters meaningful language and literacy development. Through practical strategies, teachers will learn to create rich opportunities for students to engage in speaking, listening, and reading as pathways to writing. The course also introduces genre-based instruction using the Teaching and Learning Cycle, equipping educators with tools to guide students toward becoming proficient, confident writers. Additionally, teachers will learn how to gather and respond to evidence of students’ oral and written language development to better support individual growth.

IKUN×ÊÔ´Íø – Graduate-Level Extension Credit Information
The IKUN×ÊÔ´Íø partners with this program to offer graduate-level extension credit(s) in semester hours through the Credit Validation Program. To earn units, participants must register for and successfully complete coursework through the external program provider.
Credits earned through USD’s Credit Validation Program are widely accepted by many school districts and universities across the United States for purposes such as license renewal, required professional development hours, short-term skill building, salary advancement, credentialing, and potential advanced degree pathways. These units do not apply toward a master’s or higher degree program at the IKUN×ÊÔ´Íø; however, they may be transferable to advanced degree programs (e.g., MA, EdD, PhD) at other institutions that accept external graduate-level credits.
Participants are responsible for confirming acceptance, transcript requirements, deadlines, and applicability of units with their employing district or intended institution prior to enrollment.
Audience: English Language Arts and Secondary Literacy teachers in grades 6–12
Refund Policy: All Credit Validation enrollments are refundable, minus a $25 processing fee, if requested within 30 days of the enrollment date. No refunds will be issued after the 30-day period. Refunds will not be issued once a grade has been assigned or after the 30-day period has passed.
